Sunshine in a Bottle!

Semillon is most often seen with Sauvignon Blanc in white Bordeaux. Yet, outside Bordeaux, Semillon’s most famous home is Australia where it is often blended with Chardonnay into magnificent dry white wines. A fabulous combination of two leading varieties from New South Wales, our 2008 Grass Tree, Riverina Semillon Chardonnay, South Eastern Australia is a medium bodied, easy drinking wine and the epitome of “sunshine in a bottle”.

Riverina, located inland in New South Wales between Sydney and Melbourne, is the fertile agricultural region these grapes were sourced from. But, bold Aussie winemakers haven’t entirely adopted the Old World theory that a specific site with a distinctive terroir makes the wine. Instead, they subscribe to the philosophy that good wine comes through selection and blending, the goal being a wine with fairly consistent flavors year to year. Combination wines are a distinctly Australian practice whereby the names of both grape varieties are put on the label to maximize the wine’s appeal and demonstrate that the character and flavor of each wine will be present in the release. By law the variety listed first is present in the largest volume. The exact percentage must be listed, but it usually appears on the back label.

This is definitely not your everyday Aussie. Here Semillon and Chardonnay, two classic grape varieties, marry beautifully for a final product that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Semillon contributes zesty citrus and straw aromas. Its low acidity and rich silky texture combine nicely with the peach-melon quality of the Chardonnay. Soft vanillin oak, the result of American oak fermentation, rounds out the blend. Taste it for a fantastic summer wine. At this price, it’s one that you’ll be pouring well past Labor Day!

if you like semillon you will like this wine - nice nutty style good food wine - a little sweet

Typically not a fan of most white wine but sent this wine through wine club and loved it! Bought 6 bottles, now returning for a case of 12!! Now, one of my most favorite wines!!
