It’s time for Tempranillo. The word is out on the vibrant, colorful, knock-out wine from Spain. The popularity of this unique grape (known in Ribera del Duero as “tinto fino”or “tinta del pais”) is no surprise given its concentrated flavors and exquisite aromas. It’s also understandable given the healthier Mediterranean lifestyle that so many Americans have adopted.

Our incredible 2007 El Salegar from the Ribero del Duero region of north-central Spain is a lovely young fresh Tempranillo with tones of wood from aging, and an excellent daily selection. Sourced from Bodegas Valle de Monzon, this release derives from ancient vineyards that dot the area of the River Gromejon. The winery is fairly new relative to others in the region, having been founded in 1993. Nevertheless, it is clearly one that is helping to bring Ribera del Duero that much closer to Rioja’s reputation as the country’s leading Tempranillo producer.

With clean cherry flavors, notes of licorice and a little violet, it’s earthy, herbaceous and highly acidic with nutty olive like quality similar to Sangiovese. It was aged in American oak for five months, much less than a typical Spanish wine, and will develop layers of velvety lushness with further aging.

From the 2007 vintage in Ribera del Duero which was dubbed “outstanding” by Robert Parker, the El Salegar is a must for all Spanish wine lovers and the perfect introduction to the region for those willing to explore interesting and more unusual wines.

Tasting Notes This wine shines a remarkable, impenetrable deep purple color. Fragrant cherries, plums and blackcurrants leap out of the glass amalgamated with spice, tobacco licorice and earth in the mouth. Well-balanced acidity and a strong persistent finish.
Awards 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards: Commended. 2010 World Wine Championships: Silver, Highly Recommended, Best Buy.
Food Pairing Notes When an assortment of Spanish tapas arrives at your table, Tempranillo is ready to go to work. As a versatile, lighter red, it marries wonderfully with an array of dishes whether they include cheese, fish, poultry, or beef. It’s the perfect partner with quesadillas. Its tannin/acid balance also makes it a great choice with meats like lamb and pork
